2015 Author Questionnaire

Who designed the covers?
I actually do my own cover design. I found that it was challenging for me to articulate the visions in my head, and so I decided to learn Photoshop and some graphic design basics. There’s been some trial and error, but I’m absolutely in love with my current design.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?
I do read them, though I never respond to them unless I know the reviewer personally (and even then the response would be private). I look at good or bad reviews essentially the same way: tastes are subjective, and everyone likes something different. If you ever want to make yourself feel better about a bad review, go look at some of the greatest bestsellers of all time, or the classics.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I try not to lay too heavy on the themes, but the main thing I try to convey in every book is the threads that motivate each of us. What constitutes the human condition? I think the answer is different for everyone, but I love taking a character and giving them dimension… enough that you can’t put them in a box or define them. We don’t live in a world of black and white. Everything has shades of grey.

Can you share what your current are projects?
Sure! Busy year here… right now I’m in the middle of rewrites and edits for Empire of Shadows, which will be Volume 5 in the core House of Crimson & Clover series. It’s set to release April 21, and is going to be not only the longest, but the most complex (and likely controversial!) of the series. Volume 6 and 7 will also be out before the end of the year. I’m also going to be a part of 6-7 box sets this year, so keep an eye out.

What books have most influenced your life most?
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy… honestly ANY book by Tolstoy, but this one in particular showed me the fine art of characterization. He designed 500 characters for this book, and each one of them felt uniquely whole and memorable… flawed to perfection. I read this book about 15 years ago and I’m still recovering.
Also:
No one can spin a tale like Dickens. No one. And Anne Rice gifted me with my love of lyrical language.

Do you ever experience writer's block?
Sure, often actually. But the only real cure I know for writer’s block is to write. Keep writing, even if it looks like utter crap. Usually my “worst” writing surprises me and ends up being 70-80% salvageable. If I waited for the perfect inspiration to strike me every time, I’d be writing the same novel the rest of my life.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
He’s not too new, but Joe Hill has absolutely caught my attention. I’ve read everything he’s put out so far and I can’t wait for him to write more. Best writer of this generation.

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?
Yes, definitely. And especially when I’m writing a hugely emotional scene… I find that I *have* to get in their head in order to pull it off. I have to smell what they smell, feel what they feel. Every sense has to match. Other times I feel like I can safely observe their thoughts from afar.

What are your expectations for the book?
The same as all my books: that I put out work that I feel I did my very best on. My very best changes as I improve, so I can only seek to do as best as I’m capable of right now.

Do you write an outline before every book you write?
I didn’t used to, but I find as I progress further in my series, if I don’t use one, the details run away from me. At heart I am more of a seat-of-the-pants writer, so this can be an adjustment for me at times. But I’m also much happier when things are organized and I don’t miss important details.

Thanks for taking the time to interview me! J ~ Sarah
